Evidently I'm too old to recall the
mass-suicide of the Jones cult, but these days the phrase "drink the kool-aid" never manages to summon, in my mind, the sinister connotation it's used to imply. Instead, I find it rather condescending in its general usage. It is overused, of course--but acceptable for kooks exhibiting genuinely kookish behaviors and beliefs.
