These people may be barking up the wrong tree trying to make it intentionally darker.
A few months ago I had one of those moments where I looked at the Mario game, imagined Mario as a human being in that world, and yipes.
The movie was, well, nonsensical. Even Dennis Hopper couldn't make it good.
