A few quick thoughts:

Owning property can be thought of part of a retirement port. and plugs a hole in your equity ballon... (rent paid is money gone forever. )
You say apartment ergo after the "sale" there will probably be HOA fees. I am a big fan of owning an entire structure away from home owner associations... but one bad apple of a neighbor can make you question this.
