Actually, I think Lieberman's point is that humiliation isn't an excuse for retribution. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." Is an American's head a proper exchange for the humiliation and patently illegal abuse of prisoners?

Maybe, maybe not - but remember that the enemy (self declared) used retribution as the excuse for all of these acts. Contrition, among other things, is a request to substitute forgiveness for revenge, is it not?
