1. In 1994, I newgrouped the Usenet newsgroup alt.a.b.c.d.e.f.g.h.i.j.k.l.m.n.o.p.q.r.s.t.u.v.w.x.y.z. How clever was my 15-year-old self?
2. I used a bunch of screen grabs to dump the Animaniacs sprites into what I was hoping would become an Atari 8-bit demo where Yakko, Wakko and Dot would randomly stroll across the logo. I got pretty far, but when I tried to add raster color to them, it somehow broke everything and I gave up.
I wonder if I can finish it now.

Does the MausBoy character have any relation to the character in the book "Maus" by Art Spiegelman, where one man's holocaust survival story is told through comics which feature mice instead of people?
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 11:27:31 -0500
Also, I always liked "futhark".
--Nick B Tue, 31 Oct 2006 11:30:35 -0500
I think despite the power and grace of Spiegelman's Maus I & II, it needn't be the sole use of the German word for mouse in English.
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 11:43:52 -0500
I apologize for asking the question, oh mighty great one. I am ashamed to have wasted such words when in your presence.
Please forgive me. I shall sacrifice three lambs tonight in your honor. Unless you would prefer another animal. But from what I hear, lamb is fairly cheap these days. Of course, monetary value should have no influence in my acts to please you, for pleasing you gives meaning to my life.
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 12:25:28 -0500
Sweet!
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 12:29:26 -0500
So you're cool with the lamb then? My eldest son might be available, but no promises.
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 12:31:28 -0500
Oh, I don't care about the lamb, I'm just happy to hear that pleasing me gives meaning to someone's life... it sounds like it might come in useful someday.
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 12:33:17 -0500
The latter two comments were not made by me, although I did make the first comment regarding "MausBoy" and his possible relation to the Spiegelman book.
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 12:54:44 -0500
Jimminy f'in crickets. I really need to put in a rudimentary account / password system.
I'm begining to doubt the sincerity of the person who claims that pleasing me gives meaning to their life.
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 13:15:40 -0500
I'd highly doubt he was sincere, although I'm assuming you're being sarcastic in that statement.
It seems as though he might be the same person who has been causing ruckus on other entries.
I, on the other hand, generally just read your entries and make a comment every now and then. I've never thought of a good nickname, though, so I tend to change it depending on what I'm writing about. If you know of a better name for me to keep using, let me know. Maybe it would simplify things a bit.
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 13:30:12 -0500
I do prefer people to have consistent identities, but I'm not a fascist about it.
Pick whatever name you like. You could even integrate it with a content-sepcific tag, ala
"Anon 'Spiegelmeister' O'Muss", "Anon 'Disco Duck' O'Muss", etc
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 13:41:48 -0500
wow, kirk, your troll is weird! hey, troll, are you reading this? you're weird!
--FoSO Tue, 31 Oct 2006 14:46:14 -0500
(i am now prepared to have several strange comments posted under my pseudonym...)
--FoSO Tue, 31 Oct 2006 14:47:06 -0500
Well, the whole name-grabbing thing is so annoying... said troll is just sticking thumbs in ears and going "neener neener! you trust people online! what do you think this is, the internet circa 1986?" So I have to make the system less convenient and slightly more irritating for everyone.
So I guess I'm grateful it's not more malicious, but still; the impersonation was funny, once, ort of, getting me in a minor lather about a rather un-my-Mom like pointed comment about my personal life choices. But doing it again, just to exploit the fact that I like to let people be who they say they are, is just irritating.
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 15:02:58 -0500
Kirk, one suggestion if you go to "account mode," just because I love the possibility for blog/page-tising: allow for a homepage link. But that's just me being selfish. =D
--The_Lex Tue, 31 Oct 2006 15:26:05 -0500
Lex, I don't understand your request. What kind of homepage link?
The site will always be fully browable anonymously; and you're always free to link to the front page, or if you click on the little triangles next to the date you get a bookmarkable page of just that day's entry ("permalink")
Usernames would just be for comments, and possibly a tie-in with the sidebar system.
Or are you looking for something else?
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 15:41:26 -0500
I think you're not fully understanding my request.
Let's try it again: When posting a comment, it would be a neat if my name/sign-off could be a link to my own blog or homepage. If Evil B or FoSO has a blog or homepage, they could have their names be links to their blogs/homepages, etc. etc.
Again, it would just be neat on a selfish plane, so it's not essential to my existence.
--The_Lex Tue, 31 Oct 2006 16:12:15 -0500
I was trying to think of a better way of going about guaranteeing that the author of a comment is indeed the author of the comment, but I can't think of one. Having frequent users login all of the time seems to be a little tedious, although a cookie thrown in there might help out that problem.
I suppose I was thinking more along the lines of filtering out spam, as opposed to filtering out imposters. But your spam feature seems to be fine, so now you're just left with the imposter problem. You could just make it really simple and if they have a name that is recognized by you, then they are prompted for a password, as opposed to them having to enter the password as soon as they get to the page. Plus, if you implemented a cookie, once they logged in once it would act exactly like it was before.
I don't know, just some ideas I had.
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 16:32:54 -0500
Lex: you're right, I misread your request. I think I'm cool with a homepage-link, at least for regular posters. I might keep it a manual process, like anyone can seamlessly create a new account, but only bona fide known folks get a homepage link and a sidebar editing account, which I'd like to tie in the login for.
S-m, your thinking is similar to mine, including using cookies to prevent having to re-eter info every time (heh, that's a feature the blender has been needing for a while... )
--Kirk Tue, 31 Oct 2006 16:49:20 -0500
Neat!
--The_Lex Tue, 31 Oct 2006 16:51:28 -0500
hey S-m, nice to have you as a known regular poster!
--FoSO Tue, 31 Oct 2006 17:06:42 -0500
Thanks FoSO, although this whole "Spiegel-meister" bit is a little annoying to type in everytime... Any suggestions on a better nickname?
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 18:03:19 -0500
Maybe TSM? or Spiegel? (The latter reminds me of Schmiegel, or however you spell Gollum's other personality's name.)
--The Spiegel-meister Tue, 31 Oct 2006 18:05:51 -0500
TSM seems succinct. do you like it? if it works for you, go with it.
