"Hi--"

So:
a few years after our love had unrequited its last:
I'm at a small party--at her invitation--
both of us with the romances of our lives in tow.

She still has this conspiratorial, perplexed way of saying "Hi--" (not as a greeting; as an aside) that I have been thinking about. It seems to say "I don't know what we are doing here, but it seems pretty good."

("I don't know what we are doing here, but it seems pretty good" is as good a model for life as any; better than most.)

She used to say "Hi" like this when were (again) rediscovering our old physical connection; now she says it...
in recognition of a friendliness that survived my pining for her,
that survived my no longer pining for her as well.

Says it in the shadow of the new loves that we've both found.

Perhaps I am looking for too much from a simple gesture. It wouldn't be the first time.
