Given its egalitarian nature, I'm not surprised by wikipedia, but the Profootball Hall of Fame is on the ball (so to speak) as well: http://www.profootballhof.com/history/release.jsp?release_id=1481
Of course, the big thing I'm taking from all this is that "football-shaped" = "prolate spheroid"
