The dark flipside to the MLKjr holiday, the obverse of amplifying the positive message aspect of equality and justice, is the reminder for the potential for horrible violence in American society, amplified by the nearly unfettered availability of guns.

Right now at that stage where fewer people can come right out and say what they think about races, at least not in polite society (or maybe they've come round to some idea of equality albeit with tremendous caveats), and they think we've reached a land of the USA living up to its goals of individual opportunity and justice, and so any further work to make that happen is just "reverse racism", and that really, following MLK Jr's vision is stopping all this anti-racism work 'cause didn't he want us all to be "colorblind" anyway?
