Went to the Arlington Street Church (UU) yesterday with Mo, to listen to Kim preach, but she wasn't there. Interesting church- a little run down, clearly very gay-friendly, and kind of a mishmosh of different traditions. (Everything from readings from AA books to a performance by Tibetan singing bowls.) It set off an interesting talk with me and Mo, it felt a bit like 'play-acting' to me, verging in the (unintentionally) disrespectful but she thought was sincere and learning-centric. Then I went with Ivan and Kayla to see "Galaxy Quest", the kids liked it but it wasn't as good as I'd heard, the best part was Sigourney's cleavage. Later Ninan mentioned that Ivan's having trouble applying himself to homework. Looking back, in fifth grade I'd do anything to get out of homework and in sixth I was always a mid-quarter member of the D&F club. I wonder if sharing my experience with him might help. 00-3-20 --- I heard on the radio this morning that "Today the Pope celebrated mass on a hillside in Israel". Now, I'm no theologian, but somehow, I just can't see this guy *celebrating* mass... "Woohoo! It's *mass*! It's there even when we're weightless! Without it there would be no intertia! It's much better than volume or even density! It leaves length width and height *way* in the dust! Chant with me! MASS! MASS! MASS! All-riiiiight!" Then again, I can't really see this guy wearing a hat like that, so I guess we're even. 00-3-24 --- Occam's eraser: The philosophical principle that even the simplest solution is bound to have something wrong with it. --slashdot.org --- Today at the Arlington Street Church they had a man translating into signlanguage. It's amazing to watch. Although I don't know the language it seems like it might be making up for in emotional content what it misses in raw vocabulary. Now at the Starbucks counter, Mo and I have a front row view of a man who seems to be (re)learning to walk. His friend pushed up his wheelchair, and he's been taking steps relying on a railing. Two women join the pair with some goodies from Starbucks. It reminds me of my dad. 00-3-26 --- "How about we reenact the resurrection with hand puppets instead?" --Captain James Israel, when pushed to hold a sunrise Easter service.) --- "Never test for an error condition you don't know how to handle. " --Steinbach --- I've been Jonesing for this $2000 RCA 36", HDTV compatible, SVGA ready tv. That's a lot of money for a television, but you can swing the numbers games a lot of ways. 3 months rent, (2 if we had a nicer place), 3 digitical cameras (and I'll probably use this more), etc etc. Most importantly, for me it represents a part of the 'good life'. 00-3-30 --- 2am on my 26th birthday. 2am thought- how do we deal with nothing lasting forever? The last few weeks have been full of work and lately thls tv- my thoughts go between Peggy Lee's "Is that all there is?" and Vonneguts "God made mud...and said to some of it 'situp!'...thank you for the honor." 00-3-31 --- How am I gonna explain "Zamfir- master of the pan flute" to my kids? 00-3-31 --- Looks like I share a birthday with the Eiffel Tower. Not to mention Al Gore and Rene Descartes. 00-3-31 --- "Kirk, it's your birthday, do not be obsessed with death [...] At least not until the project is finished." --Rob Baum 00-3-31 --- You've been dead before, remember. What was the first 15 billion years of the universe like for you? --wallern@aol.composter, responding to my fear of missing out on the Universe after I die |
