"It's like the coronation of the locust queen" --Skinny Legs and All- one of the characters is always looking for accidental minipoems, and that was one that snuck by unlabeled. 00-7-13 --- "It looks like the war is over, but if any enemy planes appear shoot them down in friendly fashion." --Admiral Halsey, VJ day --- The very essence of romance is uncertainty. --Oscar Wilde, "The Importance of Being Earnest" --- "I've always felt that deep down I'm a genius... a person with the potential for greatness." "Are you kidding? Look at you! Look at your life!" "I know. I'm as surprised as you are." --K. Rat (Andy Mosier) --- Ever since childhood I've had this fantasy of what it would be like if I had to live an eternity in *this* moment, as I go through different situations. Heaven as a single moment extended. Which is a paradox-if you're static you can't think about the situation you are in- but interesting to think about. 00-7-18 --- "Kid, I gotta tell ya. "Yeah, me neither." --short story start from Tufts, "Tower of Billy" 00-7-18 --- There's a brilliant commercial for the VW Cabrio, a convertible. 4 people are driving on a moonlit road in the country, enjoying the night air, looking up at the moon, trying to catch the magical looking pollen as it blows past, all to this wonderful mellow folksy song 'Pink Moon'. They finally arrive at the destination, a party- through the windshield you see many cars, strings of big festive lights, people talking... it seems very pleasant but the foursome look at each other and silently decide to keep driving into the night. It's a beautifully shot piece, the convertible nature of the car permitting intimate shots from many angles in the moonlight, not just the typical headon from the front view. Even though I find the decision to ditch the party unbelievable and just the wrong choice, as a whole the spot really resonates with me. I'm seriously tempted to look into one when I get my next car. (Then again I've always liked the compact boxiness of VW convertbles.) 00-7-21 --- Last night my brain was so tired... between reading Cryptonomicon, working all weekend on ZipTran and getting through the Stile Project my head was way over stimulated. 00-7-24 --- but Sometimes at night as I lay me down to bed A funny little thought comes creeping through my head I'll be dead someday but I think it'll be alright 'Cause I get practice being dead as I'm sleeping every night 00-7-25 --- Be cheerful while you are alive. --Phathotep, 24th Century B.C. --- So, if there is a God, I think most reasonable people might agree that he's at least incompetent, and maybe, just maybe, doesn't give a shit.
